Paul, Head of Client Leadership at Aon, mentored Mario, an A-Level student interested in careers related to Economics and Management. Paul’s role within the organisation meant that he was well positioned to offer insights into the characteristics and attributes required for effective management.

The two individuals formed a strong bond early on in their mentorship, with both of them acquiring valuable skills and gaining a fresh perspective. When asked about his experience, Paul expressed that it was a significant learning opportunity for him. "Having a different viewpoint on the world is truly fascinating and beneficial. It's challenging to recall how one felt at 17 when you're my age, so gaining a different understanding of a familiar world is immensely helpful.” “Additionally, it feels rewarding when you believe that you have made a positive impact on someone else's life."

Paul also reflected on the improvement in his feedback abilities.“I was able to provide constructive challenges and now demonstrate this approach in my daily life.” Mario was equally vocal about his learning journey. “It helped me understand specific things I could do to help with my interview skills like using hand gestures, eyes contact and giving answers that are directly related to the job that I’m applying for. Participating in this programme also helped me learn more about the layout of interviews.”

Lasting Legacy

Paul is clear is that his time mentoring made a deep impression. “I believe witnessing Mario’s reaction, observing his attentiveness to my words and his willingness to consider and implement new actions during the final interview convinced me of the difference that being mentored had made. It made me feel that he had truly absorbed the information, taken time to reflect on it and ultimately made a decision based on his own desires.”
