Princess - Elevate Mentee

Princess, a 17-year-old sixth form student, participated in the Elevate mentoring programme with the Bank of England. Initially feeling out of place in a City setting, she embraced the opportunity to gain new experiences and perspectives. Throughout the programme, Princess developed valuable skills in public speaking, interview techniques and CV writing.

I used to think Central London lacked diversity and that I didn't fit in. However, this programme has changed my perspective. Now I believe I can actually be part of that environment and lifestyle if I put in the work.

Outcomes

The programme helped Princess gain confidence and clarity in her academic and career goals. She successfully applied the skills learned, particularly interview techniques, to secure a position as Head Girl at her school - an achievement she had previously attempted three times without success. Princess also improved her performance in subjects she initially struggled with, such as English, by applying the problem-solving strategies discussed with her mentor.

She learned to communicate more effectively with her teachers and approach challenging subjects with a more positive mindset. "There's so much to learn from this programme," Princess shared. "Being mentored by someone who has gone through what we're experiencing is really valuable. They understand our situation and can guide us through it. It's reassuring to have someone remind you that everything will be okay."

Lasting Legacy

Princess now has a greater appreciation of a broader range of career possibilities, including pathways she hadn't previously considered at institutions like the Bank of England. She feels empowered to aspire to roles and environments she once thought were out of reach. She is committed to sharing her experiences with peers, hoping to inspire others to set ambitious goals and work towards achieving them. Something that she now has the opportunity to do as Head Girl.
