Fraser and Kasheef, mentor & mentee
Fraser, a Data Analyst at the Bank of England, mentored Kasheef, a computing student who was interested in apprenticeships. As an apprentice himself, Fraser was perfectly placed to provide an insight into the transition between school and the workplace.
“My mentor was brilliant and assisted me in any way I required. With his help, I now have a part-time job.”
Kasheef, Elevate mentee
Outcomes
The two created a bond early on in their mentorship with both of them developing vital skills and a new outlook. When asked what he gained from the experience, Fraser was clear that it was a great learning experience for him. “As a younger person that has not managed anyone before, this was an unique opportunity to understand different perspectives. Being able to show the options available rather than simply guide someone into making a decision was an important and new skill.” He developed, “Clear communication skills because I had to explain things.” He also reflected on the growth of his feedback skills.
Kasheef was equally vocal about his learning journey. “The CV assistance was especially helpful and the interview practice was excellent. I feel that my professional communication skills improved as I learnt a lot more formal vocabulary and when to be informal."
Lasting Legacy
Kasheef expressed that he leaves the programme with, ”An improved understanding of the world of work," and the impression that, “The Bank of England is a fun place to work. Overall, I feel much more confident explaining myself in formal situations and expressing myself in ways that are clear and concise for others.” This growth was noted by Fraser, “I’ve seen a noticeable difference in my mentee. We are now connected on LinkedIn and I am really keen to see what the future holds for him.”
