Tathya, Insight2Uni Mentor

Tathya joined Insight2Uni as a mentor while studying Biomedical Sciences at university. Having benefited from a widening participation mentor herself when applying to university, she understood first-hand how valuable it could be to have someone providing guidance and reassurance during what can be an overwhelming process.

When the opportunity came to support Black heritage students, Tathya was particularly drawn to the programme. Representation mattered to her, and mentoring offered an opportunity to provide the kind of support she had once received herself.

Over several years as a mentor, Tathya helped students navigate university applications, build their confidence and see higher education as somewhere they could belong and thrive.

Outcomes

Mentoring played an important role in shaping Tathya’s career in widening participation, helping her develop practical experience while confirming that supporting young people was something she wanted to pursue professionally.

Through Insight2Uni, she developed valuable transferable skills, including accessible communication, empathy, self-reflection, adaptability and confidence in presenting to others. All skills she now uses in her role as a Graduate Outreach Officer.

The impact was equally meaningful for her mentees. Tathya helped students navigate an often overwhelming university application process and saw their confidence grow over time. One of her proudest moments came when a former mentee told her that her support had helped her secure a place to study Physiotherapy at King’s College London, her dream course.

Lasting Legacy

For Tathya, being a mentor was about creating opportunities and helping Black-heritage students see higher education as a place where they can belong and thrive. As a relatable role model, she has helped broaden students’ horizons and demonstrate that these opportunities are open to them.

Today, as a Graduate Outreach Officer, Tathya continues that work professionally, creating a powerful cycle of representation, opportunity and giving back. Having once benefited from mentoring herself, she is now using the skills and experience gained through Insight2Uni to help another generation of young people realise what is possible.
